1. Review of action items

New: On J. Khan/T. Kucera: Submit JOP description for "Multi-wavelength Observations of Large-scale Shock Waves on the Sun"

2. Boundary conditions

* No maneuvers are scheduled for the current planning period. This time, we mean it. However, if TDRS launches before 60 days of solid continuous contact has been achieved (i.e. March 17), a maneuver must be performed in the two weeks following TDRS launch, to enable another go at the continuous when TDRS impacts have passed. TDRS is currently *scheduled* to launch March 8! * MDI 3-month continuous started January 15 (we think; see above). * HESSI launch is scheduled for February 5. * TRACE is in eclipse season until February 9 - currently observing in 171. * No news from Yohkoh. * MXUVI 171 304 LyA Irr Woods/Hassler rocket in February, details coming? * VAULT launch (JOP148) has been postponed until sometime in the first two weeks of March. * MSSTA-III EUV rocket launch has a tentative date: March 20, 2002. * Commanding outlook: See AOB section. * Submodes: Submode 6 for the current planning period. Plans for a JOP104/JOP137 run April 8 to May 17/20 with SUMER in operation. Also plans for MEDOC #9 May 20-Jun 2. * The MDI team is on a track to reduce the MDI shutter usage to half or less of present usage. See full message under AOB. In short - if you have projects that require high-cadence MDI support, now is a good time to ask, and make sure to make specific requests if you need MDI data. * EIT CalRoc launch shooting for the week of June 20, 2002. Would like to have it near a repeated offpoint maneuver.

3. JOPs status

No new JOPs yet but note: JOPxxx Multi-wavelength Observations of Large-scale Shock Waves on the Sun, CDS/EIT/TRACE, POC: Josef Khan, Terry Kucera. EIT contribution is 195 CME watch (preferably full resolution). Up to 17 hours at a time, in the outer vicinity of an active region.

4. Priorities for the coming month (W06-W09, February 4 - March 3)

a) Joint observing plans and campaigns * Jan 22-Feb 8 JOP151 Active Region Streamer Study, UVCS/CDS/[Yohkoh]/EIT/MDI/LASCO, POC: Y.-K. Ko Target of opportunity: * JOP106/MMOP#011 Sigmoidal active region study, UVCS * JOP136/MMOP#009 Default HESSI collaboration, CDS * JOPxxx Multi-wavelength Observations of Large-scale Shock Waves on the Sun, CDS/EIT/TRACE, POC: Josef Khan, Terry Kucera [Note: TRACE plans for Feb 19-28 is "Continuous observing if appropriate target exists. AR tracking; flare mode; loop oscillation or filament studies"] The MMOP011 Sigmoidal active region study has been revived by the Max Millennium group (until HESSI launch). b) Individual instrument plans UVCS See SOHO monthly calendar for weekly plans CDS See their request diary for details (http://solg2.bnsc.rl.ac.uk/scientificops/request.shtml) MDI: Default plan is full disk (continuous contact). TRACE: Eclipse season until mid-February. Expect simple plans, following active regions. Currently in 171 Angstrom. LASCO/EIT: No special plans c) Intercalibration activities * Week 07 Intercal 1, CDS/EIT, POC: Joe Gurman

5. Preview of future months

* See the Monthly Calendar at: http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/soc/head_calendar.html

6. AOB

* Next SPWG: Friday February 22, 2pm (TBC) * The MDI team is on a track to reduce the MDI shutter usage to half or less of present usage. to allow the instrument to be used for another 5 or more years. We expect to have a meeting to review shutter status and plan long-term operations in a few weeks. We are still determining what changes are practical, but one of the things being considered is elimination of the nominal 8-hour campaigns as much as possible, subject to compelling science arguments. So we want to give our colleagues a heads up that MDI may not provide very good collaborative support during the late summer and fall, although we hope to return to collaborative mode in some reduced level around the first of the year. In short - if you have projects that require high-cadence MDI support, now is a good time to ask! Also, if you need MDI data, make sure you request it specifically. * DSN support should be requested at least 6 months in advance. Keep this in mind for: ground-based collaborations that require MDI support, stellar observations that require NRT, etc. * Commanding outlook These times are subject to change - more details available if wanted: Week 06 - Feb 4-10: D27 most days, Friday is good Week 07 - Feb 11-17: D27 most afternoons, Friday is good Week 08 - Feb 18-24: D27 most days, Friday has a downlink only station until 19 UT Week 09 - Feb 24-Mar 3: D27 most afternoons, Friday is mostly downlink only, Saturday is good
