On August 29, 2005, SOHO observed a substantial coronal mass ejection blast away from the Sun. But because SOHO, which is near an imaginary line from the Sun to the Earth, can only see half the Sun, we do not know from a coronagraph image if the solar storm was heading towards Earth or away from Earth. That's why we needed to combine data from different kinds of instruments. A review of other images from SOHO and from the GOES spacecraft did not show any significant solar activity near the surface, but they were not entirely conclusive. SOHO began its Weekly Pick some time after sending a weekly image or video clip to the American Museum of Natural History (Rose Center) in New York City. There, the SOHO Weekly Pick is displayed with some annotations on a large plasma display.
