SOHO Turns 18! (December 2, 2013)

PDF

SOHO was launched 18 years ago on Dec. 2, 1995. In terms of normal spacecraft operational years that would be tantamount to several lifetimes ago.

SOHO, a joint mission of the European Space Agency (ESA) and NASA, has been a dependable solar watchdog all the while. Over 4600 scientific papers using data from SOHO have appeared in the refereed literature. SOHO has also been used to discover over 2500 comets, something no one expected before launch.

Just a few days ago SOHO played a crucial role in tracking Comet ISON. Though operations of some of its instruments have been reduced or terminated, SOHO still plays a unique part in monitoring solar and heliospheric activity.

Congratulations to all who have been involved in making this mission such a resounding success!

SOHO began its Weekly Pick some time after sending a weekly image or video clip to the American Museum of Natural History (Rose Center) in New York City. There, the SOHO Weekly Pick is displayed with some annotations on a large plasma display.

If your institution would also like to receive the same Weekly Pick from us for display (usually in Photoshop or QuickTime format), please send your inquiry to steele.hill@gsfc.nasa.gov.
