Solar Outbursts Aplenty (November 8, 2013)

The Sun burst out with almost a dozen coronal mass ejections (CMEs) over a five-day period (Oct. 31 - Nov. 5, 2013). Two of these storms emerged in an expanding (though uneven) circle around the Sun, events we call "halo" CMEs. The Sun is near its period of maximum activity, so the frequency of these storms is to be expected. In these coronagraph images the Sun is represented by the small white circle. The Sun is blocked by a blue occulting disk, so that we can observe fainter events in the corona. The field of view is about 30 solar radii.

SOHO began its Weekly Pick some time after sending a weekly image or video clip to the American Museum of Natural History (Rose Center) in New York City. There, the SOHO Weekly Pick is displayed with some annotations on a large plasma display.
