Pre-eclipse Coronal Structure (March 10, 2006)

Hi-res TIF image (1.1M)

For those of you who may not know it, there is a total solar eclipse coming up on March 29. The narrow path of totality begins in Brazil and extends across the South Atlantic Ocean, through Africa and into Asia. Many people are traveling to Africa and the mid-East to see it the event first hand.

Scientists are excited at observing the event as well partly so that they can see and photograph the structures of the corona around the Sun that can never be seen otherwise . . . except with SOHO's coronagraphs. This single image from March 2, 2006, in which the Sun is blocked by an occulting disk (and is represented by the white circle) gives a good indication of how the solar coronal structure will appear.

The date of this image is almost exactly one solar rotation before the eclipse so it is likely that the major structures of the corona will appear similar to this. All of which is a kind of heads up for the coming eclipse. Abundant educational resources and a live webcast on the eclipse can be found at sunearthday.nasa.gov. Additional scientific information can be found at www.mreclipse.com.

Previous Picks of the Week

SOHO began its Weekly Pick some time after sending a weekly image or video clip to the American Museum of Natural History (Rose Center) in New York City. There, the SOHO Weekly Pick is displayed with some annotations on a large plasma display.

If your institution would also like to receive the same Weekly Pick from us for display (usually in Photoshop or QuickTime format), please send your inquiry to steele.hill@gsfc.nasa.gov.
