Higher resolution version (TIF,4.8M)
This September 9 ultraviolet image of the Sun shows a powerful solar flare, classified as an M9 event by the NOAA Space Environment Center, erupting near a sunspot. The X-ray and extreme ultraviolet radiation from the flare caused some radio blackouts, but there was no associated coronal mass ejection.
