What a Difference! (January 13, 2012)

STEREO is now regularly offering its coronagraph movies with a different, more contrasty kind of processing called (appropriately) difference processing. These COR2 coronagraph still and movies (Jan. 3-8, 2012) offer a good example of what the new method brings to the table. For one thing solar storms are more easy to spot, but the constantly streaming solar wind is much more apparent. In difference processing, the change between a frame and an earlier one (here, one hour) is detected and highlighted. This helps delineate the more subtle features. So, from now on, our users will have another interesting viewing option for the COR1 and COR2 coronagraphs.

SOHO began its Weekly Pick some time after sending a weekly image or video clip to the American Museum of Natural History (Rose Center) in New York City. There, the SOHO Weekly Pick is displayed with some annotations on a large plasma display.

If your institution would also like to receive the same Weekly Pick from us for display (usually in Photoshop or QuickTime format), please send your inquiry to steele.hill@gsfc.nasa.gov.
