Let's give some recognition to the little solar storms too. While we often focus on the large solar storms, we lose sight of the smaller coronal mass ejections (CMEs) that pop off the Sun almost every day. For a recent eight-day period June 4-12, 2013), the Sun blasted out about three good-sized CMEs, as well as almost a dozen smaller outbursts that no one pays much attention to. Yet they contribute to the record of solar activity too.

Images were taken by the LASCO C3 coronagraph. The Sun, blocked out by the solid, blue occulting disk, is represented by the small white circle in the center. The bright white object that glides in from the left is Jupiter.

SOHO began its Weekly Pick some time after sending a weekly image or video clip to the American Museum of Natural History (Rose Center) in New York City. There, the SOHO Weekly Pick is displayed with some annotations on a large plasma display.

If your institution would also like to receive the same Weekly Pick from us for display (usually in Photoshop or QuickTime format), please send your inquiry to steele.hill@gsfc.nasa.gov.
