Two CMEs (coronal mass ejections) shot out from the Sun during a 24-hour period (June 13-14, 2005), events that we have not seen much lately. The second event from the morning of June 14 was the stronger of the two and was associated with a relatively weak C-class X-ray flare from Active Region 775. This was probably the one that delivered a glancing blow to Earth's magnetosphere a few days later. CMEs are solar storms that propel billions of tons of material at millions of miles per hour. They also carry magnetic field away from the Sun, which can interact with the Earth's magnetosphere if directed our way. Please visit our Newsroom for press releases and media coverage.
