My Three Suns (July 19, 2007)

Hi-res TIF image (3.3M)

MPEG: large (3.9M)
Quicktime: hi-res (7.1M), med (1.1M)

In real estate the three most important words are "Location, Location, Location...". When it comes to solar observations, we do in fact have three spacecraft (STEREO Behind, SOHO, and STEREO Ahead) in three different locations to give us a much wider perspective than any one spacecraft could do. The composite image (July 13, 2007) shows the Sun taken at virtually the same time in the same extreme ultraviolet wavelength (195 Angstroms) from the three spacecraft. At this time the two STEREO spacecraft are separated by about 18 degrees and SOHO is holding the central position, close to the Sun-Earth line. Scientists can see features on the Sun from all three perspectives at once. This is immensely helpful in developing a clearer understanding of the structure and speed of dynamic changes that we are observing. Not only that, but as the STEREO spacecraft continue to separate (35 degrees by October, 2007), we will be able to see more and more of the Sun's surface. For you younger readers, the title is a pun on a popular 1960's TV show called "My Three Sons".

SOHO began its Weekly Pick some time after sending a weekly image or video clip to the American Museum of Natural History (Rose Center) in New York City. There, the SOHO Weekly Pick is displayed with some annotations on a large plasma display.

If your institution would also like to receive the same Weekly Pick from us for display (usually in Photoshop or QuickTime format), please send your inquiry to steele.hill@gsfc.nasa.gov.
