Want Flares, CMEs? Watch this! (October 30, 2013)

Hi-res TIF (1.2M)

Movies: QT: Large (6.9M), Small (1.9M)
MP4 (9.8M), M4V (2.7M)

Several large, active regions on the Sun burst out with about 20 eruptions over 3.5 days (Oct. 25-28, 2013). Some were flares; some were coronal mass ejections, and at least one was a prominence eruption.

The movie superimposes an image of the Sun in extreme UV light form the Solar Dynamic Observatory on a visible-light image of the solar corona obtained with SOHO's C2 coronagraph. The still was taken at 14:36 on Oct. 26.

The Sun is about at its maximum level of activity in its 11-year solar cycle, so stormy stretches like this one are to be expected.

SOHO began its Weekly Pick some time after sending a weekly image or video clip to the American Museum of Natural History (Rose Center) in New York City. There, the SOHO Weekly Pick is displayed with some annotations on a large plasma display.

If your institution would also like to receive the same Weekly Pick from us for display (usually in Photoshop or QuickTime format), please send your inquiry to steele.hill@gsfc.nasa.gov.
