SOHO Virtual Channel Definitions

What is a Virtual Channel (VC) ?

SOHO telemetry is received via virtual channels. There are different virtual channels for different telemetry types. If you are interested in SOHO data, you may commonly hear the following terms:

VC0: Instrument Housekeeping Data
VC1: Instrument Science Data
VC2: MDI High Rate Data (Received at EOF)
VC3: MDI High Rate Data (Received at Stanford University , not the EOF)
VC4: Playback Data from Solid State Recorder (SSR) Dump

Important! MDI VC2 and VC3 high rate data (primary data source for collaborations) can only be obtained: During Deep Space Network (DSN) contact when the solid state recorder has finished dumping. During normal operations, 1 hour of VC2 data is received per day during the long DSN contact.

Note: There are other virtual channels; however, the ones listed above are of primary interest to science planners.
