The series is designed to center on selected topics of interest in Solar Physics. The series aims to gather senior and junior researchers, from both the theoretical and the observational fields, and instrumental technology experts, in order to encourage the development of new ideas and instrumentation. The European Union is co-sponsoring the series by providing the funding for half of the budget. European staff members of ASPE are: - B. Schmieder, Observatoire de Meudon, France - P. N. Brandt, Kiepenheuer Institut fuer Sonnenphysik, Germany - O. Kjeldseth-Moe, Institute of Theoretical Astrophysics, Norway - M. Vazquez, Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias, Spain After the 1st and 2nd successful ASPE conferences, held at Puerto de la Cruz (Tenerife, Spain) in 1996, and at Preveza (Greece) in 1997, it is our pleasure to announce that the third meeting of the series, entitled "Magnetic Fields and Oscillations", will take place in Potsdam/Caputh, Germany on September 22-26, 1998. During the past few years the observational basis in solar physics has been tremendously improved by new space-borne and ground-based facilities (e.g. SOHO, YOHKOH, GONG) as well as by new observational methods using existing telescopes. This conference provides a timely opportunity to present these new observations and discuss them within the frame of the latest theoretical ideas. As the promotion of young scientists is one of the basic aims of this series of euroconferences, young graduate students and post-docs are strongly encouraged to attend this meeting and present and discuss their results there. The overall theme will be "Changes in Magnetic Connectivity in Small- and Large-scale Structures in the Solar Atmosphere". This will be the third in the series of SOHO-Yohkoh workshops. As before, there will be a minimum of formal structure, a maximum of hands-on data manipulation, no printed proceedings, and heavy use of the World-Wide Web as a medium of reporting. This recipe has worked quite well so far. In the previous workshops we have worked with CME signatures (GSFC, early 1997) and active regions (MEDOC, late 1997). These subject areas required the coalignment of different imaging data sets, and we expect that the present subject will make even greater demands in this area. We hope to use this workshop to improve general knowledge of image coalignment and the development of practical tools in this area. For organizational details, please access the following URL: http://www.solar.isas.ac.jp/CDAW3/cdaw3.html which also contains links to pages describing the previous workshops. Please note that we intend to restrict participation in this workshop, so in your e-mail expressing interest please include some brief comments about your specific areas of scientific focus, or phenomena of interest; we will probably wish to limit the workshop to specific data intervals, so please also be specific in this area. Please note that April 6-10 is the cherry blossom season in Japan! Together the coronal and particle instruments on SOHO offer a comprehensive observational capability to investigate those physical processes in the photosphere, chromosphere, transition region and corona that provide the energy input that leads to coronal heating and acceleration of solar wind from coronal holes. In that regard, it is important to examine the roles of both the large scale magnetic structure and small scale structure such as bright points, polar plumes, spicules, and macrospicules and their relationships to large scale wind streams and to the microstreams originally observed by Ulyssess in the flow from polar coronal holes. The Soho observational capability can be greatly extended by frequent collaborations with ground based observatories, Yohkoh, TRACE, Ulysses, and other spacecraft. Reviewing the results obtained so far will allow us to assess the progress toward understanding coronal holes and the solar wind, and will present the user community with input to shape the future program of SOHO science. Proposed themes include: - Solar wind models from the sun to 1 AU: Constraints by "in situ" and remote sensing measurements - Energy input, heating and solar wind acceleration in coronal holes - Coronal hole boundaries and interactions with adjacent regions. - Composition and elemental abundance variations in the solar atmosphere and solar wind. The themes may be adjusted based on the submittals of the participants, and further deliberations by the Science Organizing Committee. Presentations covering investigations with the relevant SOHO instruments, coordinated observations from other ground based and space based instruments, and theoretical studies of related phenomena, are welcome. The workshop will have invited oral talks in plenum, and poster presentations. Most of the time will be allocated to parallel workshop sessions, to discuss the scientific subjects and on-going and future investigations. Participants are encouraged to make short presentations at the working groups. Reports from the working groups will be presented in a closing plenary session.
