SOHO and the 2002 Eclipse

Expeditions

To the SOHO Eclipse 2002 page

Below is a list of the eclipse expeditions that have requested special observations from SOHO, with a few notes about each expedition.
Totality Where Who Observations Request Rationale
5:56 UT Angola S. Koutchmy, R. Schwenn, F. Auchere White light images A set of EIT full disk images, one LASCO C2 "best quality" as close in time as possible, LASCO observations before & after Filling the gap in SOHO coverage, allowing streamers to be traced back to their roots on the Sun's surface.
06:19 UT South Africa S. R. Habbal et al. CCD images in S IX 12520 Å, Fe XI 7892 Å, Fe XIII 10747 Å, and Fe XIV 5303 Å SUMER observations of S IX 871.73 Å, Fe X 1463.5 Å, Fe XI 1467.08 Å, Fe XII 1242.01 Å, Si XII 520.67 Å (2nd order), He I 585.33 Å (2nd order), He II 1084.94 Å (2nd order). UVCS observations at 1.5 Rsun Determination of the solar coronal magnetic field structure
06:20 UT Kruger National Park
South Africa
C. StCyr
J. Davila
White-light Multi-Aperture Coronal Spectroscopy (MACS) of the corona during a total eclipse. EIT 4-sector set both before and after (within +/-2 hours); An EIT 304 Å image near or at totality, a C2 before and after (within +/- 1 hour); and the nominal EIT 195 CME Watch (not crucial) Measuring electron temperature and bulk flow parameters at several locations.
09:10 UT Ceduna, Australia J.M. Pasachoff
(Williams College)
1) 5303 A coronal green line loop observations at 5 Hz
2) polarization CCD measurements
3) observations made to match C1 in wavelength interval and field of view, to fill in the gap between EIT and LASCO for the time of the eclipse. See previous observations
A full set of EIT and LASCO images as close as possible to 09:10 UT Confirming and extending previous discovery of 2 Hz oscillations, a potential source of coronal heating. Filling the gap in SOHO coverage, allowing streamers to be traced back to their roots on the Sun's surface.
