COSTEP >> Level-2<< CD-ROM

This CD-ROM is generated for distribution of SOHO COSTEP Level-2 data.
It contains scientific data from the EPHIN and LION instruments, 
supplemented by WIND Solar Wind and Magnetic Field data.

IDL plot applications for EPHIN and LION rates are copied onto this disk 
to give users a quick opportunity to display data on screen or postscript
file or save in ASCII file for input into own graphics software.

The specifiaction of the level 2 data formats are documented in WORD files
(*.DOC). A user guide for the IDL plot programs and information on the
EPHIN status changes during the mission, on the subset of SOHO orbit
and WIND solar wind and magnetic field data are documented in plain ASCII
files (*.TXT).

These documents will reside permanently on the CD-ROMs and will
be updated corresponding to changes in data formats or application codes.

Note: as the date is encoded in the data file name and as the file names
are restricted to eight characters, there was a Year 2000 conflict. To
overcome the Y2K problem, the following file naming scheme was introduced:

Data before January 2000: EPHyydoy.* LIOyydoy.*
Data since  January 2000: EPIyydoy.* LIPyydoy.* 

The third letter in the file name is alphabetically higher after 2000 than
before 2000. Thus, the IDL subroutine FINDFILE will return the array of
filenames in the correct order.

Note:

The data files are written in ASCII format. Variables are string compressed,
which means that they will be separated by only one blank.
Epoch time tag values are 14 digit long numbers, which can be read in with a 
double precision floating point variable.
