SoHO Daily Meeting Minutes May 16, 1997 (DOY 136) Chairs: R. Doney (SOC) and K. Muglach (SOL) Notes: Werner Curdt (SUMER) ANNOUNCEMENTS: MEDOC is monitoring the daily meeting at the EOF FOT REPORT STATUS: Spacecraft is nominal (except RCVR 1). S/C Anomaly Summary: n/a Accomplished Activities: RSL, VIRGO, CELIAS, Nom HGA Planned Activities: RSL, VIRGO, CELIAS (2230) VC2 TT Cmd's GROUND SYSTEM ANOMALY SUMMARY: 135/2208, 2241 - TC Block Seg. Errors during UVCS NRT) (Cmd's retransmitted successfully DSN: No scheduled gaps Rocket: Intercal rocket was launched 19:15; real time data indicate that all instruments are OK; a CME went off during the intercal from the NW AR. INSTRUMENT STATUS: CDS: 24 h rocket support with GIS, including full sun observation; engineering activities during the weekend. SUMER: Slit is now at central meridian; did polar Plume observation at the south pole; will run a study to support IR thermal mapping observation at Kitt Peak. UVCS: Supported rocket with 1.2 - 2.2 W-limb scan and L_alpha obs at disk centre; will continue global dynamic study; will map SW quadrant. LASCO: Supported rocket with polarization sequence; saw CME in equa- torial streamer after the intercal; no recent images available. EIT: Did synoptic obs and CME watch; supported intercal JOP (inter- rupting CME watch); will continue AR study with 304 A images and 195 A sequence during the weekend. MDI: Continues long term obs; saw quadrupol magnetic feature in NE quadrant. ATTACHMENT: Summary of the ERNE observations of the CME on May 12 (EIT observation at 04:30). First protons with energy > 25 MeV arrived between 5-7 UT. Maximum 4-6 hours later. Maximum 2-hour average intensity 2 protons/cm**2*s*sr*MeV. This intensity is 3-4 orders of magnitude above the sensor background In energy range 25-50 MEV the peak intensity was 1.5 orders of magnitude above background. The energy spectrum was hard (spectral index roughly about -2). The shock passage at 0056:30 UT on May 15 (reported by Fred Ipavich) caused a strong peak in ERNE low energy proton channels during 2330 May 14 - 1:30 May 15 (using the 2-hour time resolution of ERNE). The peak intensity was again about 2 protons/cm**2*s*sr*MeV. The injection spectrum of the shock was weak. No peak intensity cannot be separated in the energy range above 25 MeV. regards Jarmo
