Due to unfavourble weather conditions (the project scientist was trapped in a snowstorm on the beltway) the meeting took place only in the afternoon starting at 1:30 pm.

1. Status of JOPs

B.Fleck presented the status of JOPs as of Jan 11. The left column in the table below indicates for which experiments exist fairly detailed observing plans, whereas the input for the experiments listed in the right column is still TBD. The JOP leaders are requested to contact experiment representatives from those teams to finalize the JOPs. B.Fleck to remind JOP leaders individually.

The following three questions were extensively discussed:
  1. What is the minimum number of co-operating instruments to have a JOP?
-> at least 2, obviously, but two cooperating instruments (say a SUMER/CDS study) not necessarily make up a JOP.

  2. What to do with similar JOP proposals?
-> to optimize the science output, the JOP leaders should talk to each other and see where their JOPs overlap and where they are complementary; an identical science objective does not necessarily mean that the JOPs are identical; the actual observing program may well differ significantly.

  3. When does the role of the JOP leader end?
-> some attendees felt that it should end after the observations are done, others felt that the role of the JOP leader should continue as coordinator throughout the data reduction and analysis phase; after some discussion the present policy as layed out on the "Get Involved" page on the Web was agreed to.
JOP 010 (Stellar Co-alignment by Don Michels) will be moved to the Intercalibration JOPs and become ICAL 008.

2. New JOPs

E. Antonucci presented a new JOP to measure Alphen Waves.

B. Fleck presented an e-mail from Don Hassler with three new JOP proposals:

  1. Polarization studies using SOHO S/C roll
  2. Wave and Oscillation studies
  3. Joint observations with MLSO MkIII/H-alpha/He 10830 imager

MCE Huber presented 5 new JOPs, all involving ZIMPOL (Zuerich Imaging Polarimeter):

  1. Network magnetic field structure
(A.Gabriel also expressed his interest in a JOP addressing the height structure of the network; to be discussed with P.Lemaire to see to what extent this particular aspect is addressed in JOP022)
  2. Correlation between upper chromospheric emission and magnetic field
  3. Explosive events and coronal heating
  4. Thermal bifurcation
  5. 3-D structure of coronal features

He also mentioned an Intercalibration JOP to be developed for the HIRES rocket (to be discussed in detail by the SICWG).

3. Plans for remainder of commissioning phase

Not discussed due to the unfavourable weather conditions. A weekly planning meeting is scheduled for Monday, January 15, where this will be presented and discussed in detail.

J.Kohl mentioned plans for coordinated calibration observations of star 38 AQR, starting around Feb 16. Additional DSN time may be needed. P.Lemaire and J.Raymond to work out precise timing.

There is an action on the PIs to provide science plans for remainder of commissioning phase until HOI (Action SPWG-1.1). Input to PS before Jan 26.

4. First month of SOHO science

There is an action on the PIs to provide science plans for first month of SOHO science after HOI (similar to CDS Science Operations Memo #1; Action SPWG-1.2). Input to PS before Jan 26. PS to integrate these individual plans and provide draft timeline for first month of SOHO science before the next SPWG meeting (Action SPWG-1.3).

5. PR matters

V.Domingo announced that ESA and NASA are preparing a brief SOHO press release, saying that SOHO is well on its trajectory towards L1, that all the instruments have been successfully switched on and that they are now being commissioned. Eventually, it will include one or two polished "first light" images. The press release should be finished by the end of week 3 and released in week 4.

V.Domingo also presented a draft layout of the SOHO News press releases, which contains both ESA and NASA logos as well as a box for PI/experimenter addresses.

It was agreed not to move forward the date of the big SOHO PR event to mid of April but stick to May 2.

Next meeting

February 8/9 (together with SWT meeting); central topic will be the first month of SOHO science after HOI

From March on, the SPWG meeting will be held on the 3rd Friday of each month (rather then the 2nd), to layout the plan for the following month;

SOHO month = calendar month

i.e.: March meeting will be held on Friday, March 15, to layout the plan for April 1-30.

Draft agenda for February SPWG Meeting

  1. Status update
  2. Boundary conditions for the coming month
  3. Priorities for the coming month, including JOPs.
  4. New JOPs
  5. Agenda for monthly meetings
  6. AOB
