SPWG Minutes
Friday, July 20, 2001
1. Review of action items
2. Boundary conditions
* No maneuvers for the current planning period.
Next maneuver will likely be in early October.
* Still no launch date for HESSI. End of September is
earliest possibility, if review board gives ok.
* Commanding outlook: See AOB section.
* Submodes:
Submode 6 until August 20 at 15 UT (TBC)
Submode 5 until August 31, time TBD
Then submode 6 until MEDOC Campaign starts (October 15), or
JOP104 run in October/November, in case HESSI is launched.
* MDI 5-day continuous: August 2-6, and August 29-September 3
* GENESIS launch July 30
* "Vault" launch 25 September: H alpha high resolution high cadence.
* MSSTA III (Montana) launch 1st week in October
* The MDI team is on a track to reduce the MDI shutter usage to half
or less of present usage, to allow the instrument to be used for
another 5 or more years. We expect to have a meeting to review
shutter status and plan long-term operations in a few weeks. We are
still determining what changes are practical, but one of the things
being considered is elimination of the nominal 8-hour campaigns as
much as possible, subject to compelling science arguments. So we
want to give our colleagues a heads up that MDI may not provide very
good collaborative support during the late summer and fall, although
we hope to return to collaborative mode in some reduced level around
the first of the year.
In short - if you have projects that require high-cadence MDI support,
now is a good time to ask!
3. JOPs status
New:
JOP145 Active Region Irradiance Study (#6786), CDS/MDI/EIT/TRACE,
07:00-24:00 UT, POC: Eoghan O'Shea (eoshea@so.estec.esa.nl)
MDI will contribute with high cadence magnetograms when possible.
Synoptic program includes only 96 min mags + i-grams when in high
rate (no doppler).
Modified (after meeting):
JOP118 Temperature Range of the Sunspot 3-minute Oscillations,
CDS/TRACE/MDI, POC: Olav.Kjeldseth-Moe@astro.uio.no
Minor change in CDS study lineup (dropping O_SPOT_B).
4. Priorities for the coming month (W31 - 36, July 30 - September 9)
a) Joint observing plans and campaigns
Discussed at previous meeting(s):
* Jul 23-Aug 5 JOP145 Active Region Irradiance Study (#6786), CDS/MDI/TRACE,
07:00-24:00 UT, POC: Eoghan O'Shea (eoshea@so.estec.esa.nl)
New:
* Aug 6-19 JOP118 Temperature Range of Sunspot 3-minute Oscillations,
CDS/TRACE/MDI(TBC), POC: Olav.Kjeldseth-Moe@astro.uio.no,
Terje Fredvik (local). 2-3 days continuous run on spots
crossing meridian, and 10-14h runs on other spots.
TRACE Aug 10-19 originally - most likely will participate all the time.
MDI still TBD, but will likely support with 1 min cadence (when possible).
* Aug 19-25 CDS/BBSO Quiet Sun Study, POC: Louise Harra, 15:30-01:00 UT.
Start may be delayed due to JOP118.
See monthly calendar at:
http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/soc/head_calendar.html
The MMOP011 Sigmoidal active region study has been revived by the
Max Millennium group (until HESSI launch).
b) Individual instrument plans
CDS:
CDS will have one full day of CME watch per month (July & August).
* Aug 27-Sep 9 CDS Extended Coronal Effects of Flares (TBC),
POC: Carl Foley (caf@mssl.ucl.ac.uk)
* Week of Aug 20 CDS Raw dumps - note about NRT.
UVCS:
* Jul 30-Aug 12 UVCS CME watch/JOP136, POC: Kuen Ko
* Aug 13-Sep 2 UVCS Polar Streamer and Coronal Mass Ejection Observations
* Aug 20-25 UVCS Alpha Leo observations
* Aug 27-31 UVCS Rho Leo observations
SUMER:
* Aug 21,30 SUMER observations by Spiros Patsourakos (details TBD).
* Aug 22-23 SUMER Alpha Leo Observations
* Aug 23-30 SUMER The Sun as a star - observing scattered light.
* Aug 29-30 SUMER Rho Leo Observations
EIT's next shutterless will most likely be in September (first week
seems promising for NRT).
c) Intercalibration activities
Week 32/33 Intercal 1 (TBC), CDS/EIT, POC: EIT planner
5. Preview of future months
* See the Monthly Calendar at:
http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/soc/head_calendar.html
6. AOB
* Next SPWG: Friday 24 August.
* NOTE: September SPWG: Friday 28 September.
* DSN support should be requested at least 6 months in advance. Keep
this in mind for: ground-based collaborations that require MDI
support, stellar observations that require NRT, etc.
* Commanding outlook
