SPWG FINAL MINUTES

1. Boundary conditions
* The next MM/SK maneuver is now scheduled for February 25, 2003. The
delta-V is 0.644 m/sec Sunward, station keeping burn time is about 1
hour 15 minutes. The fuel estimate is 0.5362 kg (SK) + 0.0196 (MM),
a total of 0.5558 kg. Some small adjustments are likely.
We would like to have all instrument plans for the pre- and post-
maneuver safing, recovery and other activities ironed out well in
advance. Please work out details w/SOCs to make sure everything goes
smoothly.
LASCO, CDS, MDI & UVCS will do "normal" safing/recovery activities.
MDI loop will be opened/closed via TSTOL. At the moment, MDI does
not anticipate a leg adjustment prior to the maneuver.
EIT will most likely run a high-cadence campaign while LASCO is
closed.
* Tape Recorder Maintenance is scheduled for March 6; very little
NRT will be available on that day (max two hours during daytime).
* TRACE is out of hard eclipse season, atmospheric absorption will
continue a few weeks more.

* LASCO observations of Comet C/2002 V1 (NEAT) from Sunday February 16
until Thursday February 20.
NOTE: During the Kudo-Fujikawa comet obsrvations, the regular LASCO
program will be reduced to two half-resolution C2 images per hour,
one regular full-resolution C3 per hour. There will be additional
images with short exposure times, but they may not be available in
real time on web pages. Some EIT 195 CME Watch images will also have
to be dropped during this campaign.
* The Mercury disk transit on May 7, 2003 will be visible from
SOHO. MDI will observe during the transit, so we cannot use the
SSR. We have the following coverage from DSN (times are BOT/EOT):
23:15 - 04:55 UT D34
05:50 - 16:05 UT D66
20:30 - 23:35 UT D16
NOTE: We have lost the backup station during the transit.
So, we should have no problem having high rate/VC2 4 hours before
and after the Greatest Transit time (10:11 UT). Expected duration of
the transit is about 5.5 hours.
We have asked for some more information from FDF before the maneuver
(e.g. approximate transit path), based on the current predictive
orbit; we expected to hear back by Thursday February 20, but the snow
conditions this week may have caused some more delay. See

in the mean time. Note that this is as seen from Earth -
e.g. time is shifted and minimum separation is different. Otherwise,
details should be quite similar, e.g. speed (about 4.0 arcsec / min )
and position angle at greatest eclipse (333 degrees).
We have also asked for a tabulation of the position vs time to be
calculated after the February 25 stationkeeping maneuver.

We would like to make a summary of anticipated transit observations;
so far we know for certain that MDI and CDS are making plans - could
everyone planning to observe this event contact the SOCs with their
plans thus far?

2. Priorities for the coming month & more
a) Joint observing plans and campaigns
* Feb 20-Mar 19 Carrington Rotation 2000, POC: Gareth Lawrence
* Mar 18 Sun-Earth Day
There are no specific observations tied to these items - no
acknowledgement necessary.
* Mar 9-20 JOP162 Magnetic Field Evolution around Leading Sunspots,
15-23 UT, TRACE/Sac Peak ASP/MDI/CDS, POC: Ted Tarbell
* Mar 22-Apr 4 JOP164 Quiet Sun Magnetic Carpet Study,
MDI/CDS/EIT/TRACE, POC: Clare Parnell, Local: Jack Ireland
TRACE has committed to two 48hr runs within scheduled period,
depending on solar conditions. Other days in the interval of Mar 22 -
Apr 4 may be devoted to other science (particulary RHESSI
coordination). MDI will support it in coordination with their
March 5 Day CC (26-30 March).
* Apr 10-17 JOP161 Comprehensive Footpoint Study,
SUMER/CDS/EIT/MDI/TRACE, POC: Scott McIntosh
MDI High Rate coverage has been requested for the real campaign. Some
details in the JOP will be filled in now that the test has been
completed, e.g: EIT & CDS observing details. LASCO accepts that their
observations may be impacted by EIT's program.
Note from SUMER: Apr 10 can be regarded as the ealiest date, Apr 17 as
the latest date. The exact date depends on the progress during the
detector checkout and the availability of a good target.
* Apr 15-May 6 JOP104 Doppler Shifts in X-ray Jets,
SUMER/RHESSI/EIT(TBC)/TRACE(TBC)/UVCS,
POC: Bernhard Kliem & Werner Curdt
* Apr 21-May 4 JOP083 High Cadence Activity Studies and the Heating of
Coronal Loops, CDS/EIT/TRACE/MDI, POC: Jack Ireland and
Ineke De Moortel
SUMER: JOP 104 out-of-limb Doppler oscillation studies will be run
during times, when JOP 161 and noble gas study are done or don't have
a suitable target.
TRACE had not received requests for coordination at the time of
responding to the minutes. They are committed to JOP161 through April
16 and to JOP083 starting on April 21, so only a 4-day window would be
available for TRACE, if coordination is requested. CDS also notes that they
are committed to JOP083.
UVCS will support JOP104 during May 1-6.
MDI will try to coordinate with JOP083 as long as the observations do
not conflict with the April 5 Day CC (23-27 Apr) plan.

SUMER on/off and submode change dates TBD
* MEDOC #11 JOP163 Internetwork/Network Oscillations, CDS/MDI/TRACE,
POC: Dipankar Banerjee
MDI will support as long as it does not conflict with any planned 5
Day CC observations. TRACE has not received a request for JOP163
during the MEDOC campaign yet.

* JOP159 CME's in Lyman-alpha (#6870), SWAN/LASCO/EIT/UVCS*,

Targets of opportunity for the whole period:
* JOP136/MMOP009 Default RHESSI collaboration (#6850)
* JOP153/MMOP003 Major Flare Alert (#6892)
Campaign number 6850 is for "individual instrument studies" selecting
an AR target [partially] influenced by the Max Millennium target.
This target will be observed by a significant number of ground based
observatories, so chances for serendipitous co-observations are good.

LASCO/EIT:
EIT will most likely do a high cadence campaign while LASCO doors are
closed for maneuver.
F Mar 21 EIT Shutterless, 17-19:40 UT, EIT/CDS
W Apr 02 Backup EIT Shutterless, 17-19:40 UT, EIT/CDS
LASCO may be requested to support IPS measurements of slow solar wind
in late May and/or early June (TBC) with high cadence white-light
measurements (primarily C2). An EIT bakeout could be scheduled for
this time to optimise LASCO cadence. IPS teams are aware of expected
SM5 periods and conflicts are not expected
CDS will participate with a time series on quiet sun near disk centre.
TRACE:
NOTE that TRACE in general reserves the right to withdraw support from
agreed, existing collaborations if a sufficiently "good active region"
is called by the Max Millennium group.
SUMER:
Will run an "HAO 'noble gas study'" some time in the April 10-April 15
time frame, alongside JOP161. Most of the time between 6. and
17. April will be used for data acquisition for detector checkout
activities. Use of NRT commanding will be made. The "HAO noble gas
study" will be made after the detector checkout was successful.
3. AOB
* Next SPWG: Friday March 28 right after weekly meeting in the EOF
* DSN support should be requested at least 6 months in advance. Keep
this in mind for: ground-based collaborations that require MDI
support, stellar/shutterless observations that require NRT, etc.
* If anyone has projects that require high-cadence MDI support, now is
a good time to ask! If you need MDI data, make sure you request it
specifically. There is no significant change in the shutter
performance over the last 10 months; monitoring continues, but no
immediate changes in operations are planned.

Saturday, Sunday. Maneuvers on Tuesday.
Many gaps on Wednesday. Downlink only

Week 10 - Mar 03 - Mar 09: D27 in the afternoons on Monday, Wednesday,
Saturday. Afternoon gaps on Tuesday,
Wednesday, Friday, Saturday. Small gaps but
otherwise good on Thursday and Sunday.
Week 11 - Mar 10 - Mar 16: Afternoon gaps on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday,
Friday. D27 on Tuesday afternoon. D27 most
of the day on Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday.
Week 12 - Mar 17 - Mar 23: D27 in the afternoons on Monday, Tuesday,
Thursday, Saturday. D27 most of the day on
Wednesday. Friday and Sunday are good.
Week 13 - Mar 24 - Mar 30: D27 in the afternoons on Monday, Thursday,
Friday, Saturday. Afternoon gaps on Tuesday
and Friday. D27 late morning/early afternoon
on Wednesday. D27 all day Sunday.
Week 14 - Mar 31 - Apr 06: Afternoon gaps on Monday, Tuesday, Friday,
Sunday. D27 in the afternoons on Tuesday,
Wednesday, Thursday. D27 all day on Saturday
