Along the edge of the Sun, particularly visible at its bottom in this video, one can observe a staccato series of fast-moving, narrow spikes bursting out from the Sun. These are called macrospicules: a predominantly vertical structure extending from the solar chromosphere (near the surface) into the corona (solar atmosphere). It is observed here in extreme ultraviolet. Macrospicules were first observed with Skylab in the early 1970's. In this six-hour video clip from Feb. 26 - 27, 2005, one can see dozens of these macrospicules almost exclusively in the north and south polar regions. Even if the overall level of solar activity is quite low at this point in the solar cycle, the Sun is still busily bustling away on smaller scales.
