The SOHO Movie Theater (December 5, 2008)

The SOHO website has a new feature that we know many users are sure to enjoy using: do it yourself solar movies. The new SOHO Movie theater feature lets users instantly create and view movies from archived frames of all SOHO instruments. The recent movie above (Nov. 30-Dec. 1, 2008) of the Sun in extreme UV light was made using the more traditional method of downloading frames, importing them into Quicktime, choosing a frame rate, and exporting a Quicktime movie, but the end result is basically the same movie seen with the SOHO Movie Theater tool. With SOHO Movie Theater, users just have to choose what instrument, file size (2 choices), and date range they want. In less than a minute, they will be viewing the movie of their choice (response time depends on how many frames they request). Beyond that, they can use viewer controls to start/stop, go faster/slower/ step though frames or even reverse. (Please note though that there is no easy way for the movies to be saved.) So if you want to see what the Sun did last month or a week last year, try out the Movie Theater. Go here and start making movies:

SOHO began its Weekly Pick some time after sending a weekly image or video clip to the American Museum of Natural History (Rose Center) in New York City. There, the SOHO Weekly Pick is displayed with some annotations on a large plasma display.

If your institution would also like to receive the same Weekly Pick from us for display (usually in Photoshop or QuickTime format), please send your inquiry to steele.hill@gsfc.nasa.gov.
