Prominence Coming Around (January 16, 2004)

Hi-res TIF image (1.8M)

MPEG: Large (5.6M), Small (1.9M)
Quicktime: Large (2.2M), Small (393K)

This series of stills taken roughly once a day for the period Jan. 8-12, 2004 show a long prominence, seen in extreme ultraviolet light, beginning to form and take shape as it rotates into view. Prominences are cooler structures that "float" above the Sun's surface, sometimes for several weeks. This one of the best profile series we have seen of the development of a prominence.

The video clip shows an interesting event. About mid-way through the clip an eruption occurs near one end of the filament that thrusts material upwards and condenses some of it near the upper end of the prominence. The end of the video clip holds the last frame of the prominence, then fades one image, then another, though two other images taken at nearly the same time, also in ultraviolet light but at different wavelengths.

Previous Picks of the Week

SOHO began its Weekly Pick some time after sending a weekly image or video clip to the American Museum of Natural History (Rose Center) in New York City. There, the SOHO Weekly Pick is displayed with some annotations on a large plasma display.

If your institution would also like to receive the same Weekly Pick from us for display (usually in Photoshop or QuickTime format), please send your inquiry to steele.hill@gsfc.nasa.gov.
