An Earth-directed CME (March 20, 2002)

  • Higher resolution version (TIF,2.7M)
  • Image series over a five-hour period shows a coronal mass ejection (CME) exploding out from the Sun, mostly to the right. The images taken by the LASCO C3 instrument show the expanding cloud of particles in visible light. By the time this CME reached Earth two days later, it had expanded to over 50 million km wide. It did generate some auroral activity.

    Previous Picks of the Week

SOHO began its Weekly Pick some time after sending a weekly image or video clip to the American Museum of Natural History (Rose Center) in New York City. There, the SOHO Weekly Pick is displayed with some annotations on a large plasma display.

If your institution would also like to receive the same Weekly Pick from us for display (usually in Photoshop or QuickTime format), please send your inquiry to steele.hill@gsfc.nasa.gov.
