Double Prominence Eruptions (September 20, 2013)

Hi-res TIF (3.8M)

Movies: QT: Large ( 17M), Small (2.5M), MP4 Large (8.3M), Small (5.2M)

Within a one-day period, two substantial prominences broke away from the Sun (Sept. 13-14, 2013). The images were taken by the STEREO Ahead spacecraft in extreme UV light. Prominences are unstable, cooler clouds of gas suspended above the Sun by magnetic forces and are often observed collapsing or breaking away from the Sun.

SOHO began its Weekly Pick some time after sending a weekly image or video clip to the American Museum of Natural History (Rose Center) in New York City. There, the SOHO Weekly Pick is displayed with some annotations on a large plasma display.

If your institution would also like to receive the same Weekly Pick from us for display (usually in Photoshop or QuickTime format), please send your inquiry to steele.hill@gsfc.nasa.gov.
