Crackle But No Pop (June 23, 2006)

This week we track an active region around for 4.5 days (June 17-21, 2006) as it twists and gyrates and crackles its way across the face of the Sun. It is observed in extreme ultraviolet light in which white areas show concentrations of energy and magnetic fields associated with sunspots. This active region was fairly benign and did not unleash any major solar storms. But it sure did keep itself busy all the while.

NOTE: The green color is a false image colorization added to the original frames (which are all in black and white) so that any viewers of similar images from our EIT instrument will know which instrument created the image that they are looking at.

Previous Picks of the Week

SOHO began its Weekly Pick some time after sending a weekly image or video clip to the American Museum of Natural History (Rose Center) in New York City. There, the SOHO Weekly Pick is displayed with some annotations on a large plasma display.

If your institution would also like to receive the same Weekly Pick from us for display (usually in Photoshop or QuickTime format), please send your inquiry to steele.hill@gsfc.nasa.gov.
