A CME and planets too! (July 24, 2002)

  • Higher resolution version (TIF,4.9M)
  • This image from 24 July 2002 shows three planets as they orbit behind the Sun from Earth. The three planets will were visible beginning 16 July and will remain in the field of view until July 27th. (Note: the horizontal lines are digital imaging artifacts, not planetary rings.) SOHO's coronagraph instrument (LASCO) blocks out the Sun with an occulting disk so that observers can see the activity in the corona. In addition to seeing the planets, the instrument has captured a coronal mass ejection as it is blasting particles out into space (to the right). Scientist are looking forward to 2004 when Venus will pass in front of the Sun.

    Previous Picks of the Week

SOHO began its Weekly Pick some time after sending a weekly image or video clip to the American Museum of Natural History (Rose Center) in New York City. There, the SOHO Weekly Pick is displayed with some annotations on a large plasma display.

If your institution would also like to receive the same Weekly Pick from us for display (usually in Photoshop or QuickTime format), please send your inquiry to steele.hill@gsfc.nasa.gov.
