The Sun actually displayed a modest rise in overall activity as indicated by appearance of 4-5 active regions over a three-day period (Oct. 17-19, 2008). The STEREO (Ahead) spacecraft watched as the several regions rotated around with the Sun. Only two of these had large enough sunspots to be officially designated as sunspot regions, but all were observed as active regions in the 195 Angstrom wavelength of extreme UV light in the Sun's corona. The magnetic polarity of the regions indicated that they belonged to the sunspot cycle that is just getting underway, so they should just be a low level preview of coming solar activity expected to peak around 2011 or 12. Within a few days these had all but disappeared.

SOHO began its Weekly Pick some time after sending a weekly image or video clip to the American Museum of Natural History (Rose Center) in New York City. There, the SOHO Weekly Pick is displayed with some annotations on a large plasma display.

If your institution would also like to receive the same Weekly Pick from us for display (usually in Photoshop or QuickTime format), please send your inquiry to steele.hill@gsfc.nasa.gov.
