Sliding Plasma and a Blow Out (May 25, 2012)

Hi-res TIF (3.8M)

Quicktime: Large ( 68M), Small ( 21M), Small (3.5M)
MPEG: Large ( 18M), Small (9.3M),

For over a day a massive cloud of plasma can be seen by STEREO Behind spacecraft as it coils and slides along above the Sun's surface before it rises up and dissipates (May 20-12, 2012). Immediately following that a prominence on the lower left of the Sun arches out and quickly breaks away over a few hours. These images were taken in extreme UV light.

SOHO began its Weekly Pick some time after sending a weekly image or video clip to the American Museum of Natural History (Rose Center) in New York City. There, the SOHO Weekly Pick is displayed with some annotations on a large plasma display.

If your institution would also like to receive the same Weekly Pick from us for display (usually in Photoshop or QuickTime format), please send your inquiry to steele.hill@gsfc.nasa.gov.
