The Sun popped off five or more coronal mass ejections into space in less than 36 hours (Nov. 17-18, 2011). The most impressive blast occurred early in this sequence. Some blew out in different directions at just about the same time. In these SOHO coronagraph images, the Sun is represented by the white circle and an occulting disk (red) blocks out the Sun so that we can see the faint features in the corona. The level of solar activity is marching higher towards an expected maximum in 2013.

SOHO began its Weekly Pick some time after sending a weekly image or video clip to the American Museum of Natural History (Rose Center) in New York City. There, the SOHO Weekly Pick is displayed with some annotations on a large plasma display.

If your institution would also like to receive the same Weekly Pick from us for display (usually in Photoshop or QuickTime format), please send your inquiry to steele.hill@gsfc.nasa.gov.
