The Sun: Kids Try Their Hand (August 27, 2003)

At first thought science and art do not seem a logical pairing to most of us, but tell that to the fourth and fifth grade students at Independent Elementary School in Castro Valley, CA.

On a visit to Goddard Space Flight Center their teacher, Linda Block, had picked up some posters and other educational materials from SOHO to help her students learn more about the Sun for science. At the end of that unit she decided to have them create their very original versions of the Sun as part of an art effort and then sent them to us here at SOHO with "thank you" notes on the back of each one. You can see for yourselves the innovative and fairly intricate results of some of these efforts. We hope that their efforts inspire teachers to try similar endeavors. You might be surprised at the results!

You can see some of the educational and outreach materials we have at the SOHO Classroom

Previous Picks of the Week

SOHO began its Weekly Pick some time after sending a weekly image or video clip to the American Museum of Natural History (Rose Center) in New York City. There, the SOHO Weekly Pick is displayed with some annotations on a large plasma display.

If your institution would also like to receive the same Weekly Pick from us for display (usually in Photoshop or QuickTime format), please send your inquiry to steele.hill@gsfc.nasa.gov.
