DRAFT MINUTES FOR SOHO SPWG MEETING ON 20070323 Latest Update: $Date: 2007/03/23 04:37:45 $ $Author: tsiili $ $Revision: 1.10 $ Change log is at the end of the document. 1. Boundary conditions a) Orbit, attitude and manoeuvres - SOHO is currently right side up - manoeuvres May 29 roll, stationkeeping and momentum management (timing TBC) Aug 28 stationkeeping and momentum management Aug 30 or 31 roll (timing TBC) b) Communications with the spacecraft Graphical DSN schedule: http://soho.nascom.nasa.gov/soc/dsn/ * May 18-Jun 5 26 m keyhole * May 22-May 31 34 m keyhole * Aug 12-Sep 9 26 m keyhole * Aug 19-Sep 2 34 m keyhole - The need and approach to reduce FOT manpower requirements needed for complex operations during the keyhole remains in effect until further notice. All available keyhole information is at http://soho.nascom.nasa.gov/soc/keyholes.html DSN planning is currently completed up to 3 June 2007. c) KNOWN submode dependent activities/submode changes: * TOO JOP153/MMOP003 Future Major Flare Watch (SM5 if SUMER observes target, SM6 otherwise) * TOO JOP175 Extended Filaments at the Limb (see sect. 2a), SM6 * Mar 16-Apr 30 SUMER Campaign * Apr 1-30 SOHO/Hinode Campaign, SUMER/HINODE-EIS/STEREO-EUVI/TRACE * May 4-17 SOHO/STEREO Campaign, EIT/MDI/STEREO-EUVI * May 9,16 EIT Shutterless #27, TBC - Some of the default SUMER campaign dates overlap with keyholes - which is not a problem in itself (submode 5 will often be needed for keyholes anyhow) as long as potential periods of no SUMER data between passes can be accepted. - Except for Major Flare Watches, TRACE will be doing full disk mosaics if/when EIT is not able to do synoptic sets due to keyhole operations. d) Instrument maintenance activities EIT bakeout periods will be during keyholes. Dates and times are defined when the DSN schedules become available. e) Others TRACE will have a summer eclipse season from about 12 May - 16 Jul (dates are TBC). 2. Priorities for the coming month and more a) Joint observing plans and campaigns Continuing campaigns: * 2002/02/25-- JOP136 Default RHESSI Collaborations (#6850), POC: Tero Siili * 2003/05/13-- Default CDS Co-observations with TRACE (#6950) * 2004/02/19-- JOP175 Extended Filaments at the Limb (#7135), EIT/TRACE/LASCO/UVCS, POC: Chris St Cyr * 2005/09/20-- JOP153/MMOP003 Future Major Flare Watch (#8007) Campaign #6850 is for "individual instrument studies" selecting an active region target [partially] influenced by the Max Millennium target selection to maximise chances of serendipitous co-observations. EIT supports all with half/full-res 195 A CME watch in submode 5/6, except JOP175 getting half/full-res 304 A CME watch in submode 5/6. As long as the spacecraft is in submode 6, all EIT CME watch will be in full res. Major Flare Watches will be in full-res even if it requires a submode change, unless the target is observed by SUMER. The relevance and continuation (whether the originators have enough/alternate data) of these campaigns (except perhaps for RHESSI) is under review. * Mar 16-31 SUMER technical ops in preparation for the Apr 1-30 campaign Ongoing. * Mar 30-Apr 2 MDI Continuous Contact Current default plan is full-disk magnetograms and dopplergrams. * Apr 01-27/30 SOHO/Hinode Campaign (#7201), SUMER/CDS/HINODE-EIS/STEREO-EUVI/TRACE/MDI, POC: Werner Curdt, Karine Bocchialini (MEDOC) SUMER is collecting proposals. Deadline for SUMER proposals is 23 Mar 2007. SUMER has received 29 new proposals and requests to reactivate existing JOPs. A description of the proposals is avaialble under http://www.mps.mpg.de/homes/curdt/hinode/HINODE_cases.html. Weekly plans for the entire campaign are in preparation and will also be accessible from the campaign page. At present it is foreseen week 14: off-limb studies and studies that requested SOLIS; also studies that ask for an AR; on April 7/8 (Easter weekend) a 36 hour plume study with many supporting parties is planned week 15: all studies with quiet-Sun disk targets week 16: rest of studies that ask for an on-disk active region and studies that ask for IBIS week 17: studies that need VTT or Themis support, also studies that ask for a bright point target This plan in part depends on the availability targets and may be changed Presently it looks like the campaign can end on 27 April, unless special observations come up that require the time from 28 to 30 April. SUMER operations have started with testing and preparations 16-31 Apr (see above). Science operations will be conducted from GSFC/EOF 1-15 Apr and from MEDOC with support at GSFC/EOF 16-27/30 Apr. CDS will also support (see also section 2c). CDS on JOPs: The campaign is likely to consist of a mixture of existing JOPs and new studies, hence neither updating an old JOP nor creating a single new JOP seems appropriate or necessary. Regarding JOPs - see section 3. MDI will also support. TRACE and STEREO-EUVI have also been included. TRACE will collaborate. UVCS will participate and plans to observe Apr.5-9. Observations described in JOP186 will take place as follows Week 14: 2-8th April Week 16: 16-22 April The following requests have been made by the JOP186 author (and modified by instrument comments): 1) Observations are not scheduled during the CDS synoptic observation times (00:00 - 07:00 UT), so as to allow CDS support. 2) Observations are scheduled to run from approximately 13:00 UT within the estimated 4-5 hour period relatively free of TRACE South Atlantic Anomalies (SAA). 3) MDI high rate observations as permitted by DSN coverage on weeks 14 & 16. FD or HR mode will be driven by target selected. 4) To allow for the time difference to Hinode planners in Japan specific details regarding precise timing, pointing should be decided by 15:00 UT 2 days before the observations. * Apr 16-27/30 SOHO/Hinode Campaign - MEDOC Campaign 17, SUMER/MEDOC, POC: Karine Bocchialini MEDOC supports SUMER during part of the SOHO/Hinode campaign. This support is internally identified as MEDOC campaign 17. See also above and section 2c/SUMER. --> #MEDOC - changes, comments? * Apr 23-29 JOP178 Filament and its Environment, TBC THEMIS/SST/VTT/TRACE/SOHO/Hinode (all TBC), POC: Brigitte Schmieder MDI has been requested to participate and barring any conflicts with the Apr 26-29 continuous contact period, MDI should be able to support JOP178. CDS will support JOP178. --> #ALL - changes, comments, additions, supports? * Apr 26-29 MDI Continuous Contact Current default plan is full disk magnetograms and dopplergrams (TBD - may depend on requests by JOP 178). * May 04-May 17 SOHO/STEREO Campaign, EIT/STEREO-EUVI/MDI, POC: William Thompson, TBC STEREO SECCHI requests synoptic EIT & LASCO data and prefers EIT to be obtaining full-resolution images. The SUMER/EIS campaign will take place in March and April to avoid EIT/SUMER submode conflict (i.e., allow SOHO to be in submode 6 during this campaign). SECCHI has also expressed interest in having Hinode to also join in the campaign (Hinode participation is TBC). The timing of this campaign is driven by the desire to conduct it when the STEREO spacecraft separation angle is in the range 7-10 degrees, but the timing is also constrained by the beginning of SOHO keyhole period on 18 May. The separation angle on May 4 is 6.5 degrees (and is acceptable to SECCHI). Timing remains TBC. EIT science planner for that period still TBD (for some months). Simon can contact Kevin and Joe in the meantime. Description of JOP 187 ("Stereoscopic Observations of Coronal Structures"; http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/soc/JOPs/jop187.pdf) has been drafted by Simon Plunkett. Still TBD, if the shutterless run #27 on May 9 will be included. MDI has also been asked to participate in this coordination for 4-17 May. Full disk, 1 minute cadence Magnetograms or high resolution, 1 minute cadence Magnetograms and Continuum images have been requested. MDI can support either 4-17 May or 7-18 May (keep in mind that a keyhole period starts 18 May). CDS will participate. TRACE will be supporting these observations. * May 7-13 Exceptional Ulysses Quadrature/Coordinated observations with radio scintillation measurements, UVCS/Ulysses/MERLIN, POC: Giannina Poletto Support from STEREO-SECCHI is being discussed by the POC. LASCO support may also be solicited (TBC). EIT support has not been asked yet. STEREO campaign has higher priority in case of conflict. For additional and more detailed information on the quadrature, see also section 2c/UVCS. --> #LASCO - supporting? * May 9, 16 EIT Shutterless #27, EIT/STEREO-SECCHI (TBD), POC (SECCHI): William Thompson The shutterless campaign during the SECCHI campaign may be dropped unless there is SECCHI interest in our keeping the shutterless in the plan. No word from STEREO yet, so our assumption is no shutterless campaign (TBC). --> #STEREO-SECCHI - changes, comments? * May 14-20 Exceptional Ulysses Quadrature/Ulysses-SOHO Quadrature together with Hinode, UVCS/CDS/Ulysses/Hinode(TBC)/STEREO-SECCHI(TBC), POCs: Giannina Poletto, Giulio Del Zanna Support from STEREO-SECCHI is being discussed by the POC. LASCO support may also be solicited (TBC). EIT can support with synoptic images and CME watch only, unless asked for something different. The Hinode proposal for this campaign has been submitted and we are waiting for the Hinode response. There are various technical issues associated with an off-limb observation, so there will be limitations in what we can do. UVCS time is allocated to do long exposures around 1.6 Rsun in the SW, for the Ulysses quadrature. If no suitable AR will be available in the SW quadrant, but there is one in the SE limb, the connection with Ulysses will be missed and observations targeted to SE. Provisional support from CDS and STEREO/SECCHI, but details are to be worked out. For additional and more detailed information on the quadrature, see also section 2c/UVCS. --> #LASCO - supporting? * Jun 13-17 MDI Continuous Contact, TBC Current default plan is full disk magnetograms and dopplergrams. Timing TBC. * Jul 18-22 MDI Continuous Contact, TBC Default campaign is full disk, 1 minute cadence magnetograms and dopplergrams. * Aug 27-Oct 14 JOP178 Filament and its Environment, TBC THEMIS/SST/VTT/TRACE/SOHO/Hinode (all TBC), POC: Brigitte Schmieder MDI cannot support JOP178 in August or the beginning of September due to a SOHO keyhole (minimal support *might* be possible depending on the availability of 34m and 70m). However, after the keyhole, MDI will start it's yearly 60 day Continuous Contact period and can only provide full disk, 1 minute cadence Magnetograms and Dopplergrams for JOP178. --> #ALL - changes, comments, additions, supports? * Sep 10-Nov 11 MDI 60-day Continuous Contact (TBC) DSN schedule is not yet known (see section 1b). MDI will run 1 min cadence, full disk magnetograms and dopplergrams. b) Intercalibration activities Last Intercal 1: 22 February 2007 * Apr 16-20 ICAL01 (#7113), CDS/EIT, TBC Details and confirmation will be determined by the planners. EIT: ICALs are OK except during the weeks of shutterless. c) Individual instrument plans MDI: See section 2a for MDI continuous contact periods. MDI may reduce the ALT cadence during Keyholes to be less than 15 ALT magnetograms per day if the lack of high rate telemetry is such that we will lose all or almost all of the 15 ALT Magnetograms each day. The ALT cadence will be decided on an individual Keyhole basis and even a daily basis during each Keyhole depending on the 70 m antenna availability at the time. MDI may also downlink select magnetograms in the 5 kbps telemetry if no 70 m passes are available at least every 2 days for Mag dump in the 160 kbps telemetry. All requests for MDI support need to be made several months ahead of time and sent to mdi-ops(at)mdisas.nascom.nasa.gov. Even outside keyholes, MDI can only do 1-minute cadence observations when we have contact and there is no recorder dump in progress. MDI's REQUEST page is at http://mdisas.nascom.nasa.gov/coordination.txt NOTE: Listing of a study on that page means *only* that a request has been received, not that it will necessarily be supported. A description of MDI Observing Modes most used for JOPs and campaigns (FD vs. HR) can be found at http://mdisas.nascom.nasa.gov/Collaborate. Anyone requesting MDI observations is encouraged to read this page in order to have a better idea of what observing modes would be best suited for a particular study. More detailed information about how MDI operates, observational constraints and telemetry information can be found at http://mdisas.nascom.nasa.gov/MDI_Collaboration_Details. MDI is back in focus 5, best focus for full-disk observing. UVCS: We have been using the LyA detector for some observations and will keep planning so when appropriate. For weekly plans, see the SOHO calendar and the UVCS planning page: http://cfa-www.harvard.edu/uvcs/observations/obst.html. A document from Steve Suess and Giannina Poletto discussing the Ulysses-SOHO quadrature geometry is available from Michael Uzzo and also at http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/soc/UlyPosAng2007-2008.pdf. CDS: For details see http://solar.bnsc.rl.ac.uk/scientificops/request.shtml. Joint observations with EIS and other Hinode instruments are top priority for CDS for the next several months, including through the period of SUMER/EIS campaign in Mar-Apr 2007. Detailed plan TBD. Detailed plans of Hinode instruments are made available to CDS at a short notice, usually one day in advance. This is not fully satisfactory but we understand that the Hinode team are very busy at this stage. CDS planners respond as appropriate. If SOHO SOCs have access to Hinode weekly plans, forwarding them to us would be appreciated. Given the extended duration of the Ulysses-SOHO quadrature, CDS will carry out several observations at a convenient date selected at a relatively short notice. LASCO/EIT: EIT: 195 A CME watch plus synoptics at 6-hour cadence, as usual. Full-res CME watch whenever we're in submode 6. --> #LASCO - changes, comments? SUMER: The SOHO/HINODE spring campaign (see also section 2a) is scheduled now from 1-30 Apr. SUMER operations including test runs etc. have started on 16 Mar. No submode change was made between the end of the Feb keyhole and 16 Mar. SUMER science planners for the campaign: 22 Mar Germerott 26 Mar Curdt (preparation phase) 02 Apr Tothova 09 Apr Kucera 16 Apr Teriaca (operated from MEDOC, with local support at EOF) 23 Apr Madjarska (operated from MEDOC, with local support at EOF) SUMER is collecting proposals, existing JOPs can be reactivated and new studies can be submitted. Before acceptance any study will be critically rated by an evaluation board. Priority will be given to SOHO/EIS collaborations. TRACE and STEREO/EUVI support as well as GBO co-observations (and self-evidently CDS, EIT, MDI) would be highly appreciated. There are tentative plans for another SUMER campaign in October/November, details are TBD. TRACE: NOTE that TRACE in general reserves the right to withdraw support from agreed, existing collaborations if a sufficiently "good active region" is called by the Max Millennium group. For TRACE summer eclipse season see section 1e. 3. Any other business * Next SPWG: Friday 27 April or Friday 20 April after daily & weekly meetings UVCS: 27 April is better TRACE: 27 April (no-one present on 20 April) The rest are FYI items: * If anyone has projects that require high rate (i.e. 1 minute cadence) MDI support, now is a good time to ask! If you need MDI data, make sure you request it specifically. There is no significant change in the shutter performance over the last 10 months; monitoring continues, but no immediate changes in operations are planned. * DSN support should be requested at least 6 months in advance. Keep this in mind for: ground-based collaborations that require MDI support, stellar/shutterless observations that require NRT, etc. * Future Mercury and Venus transits: SOC is requesting the Flight Dynamics Facility (FDF) to provide estimates and data for not only disk, but also for coronal transits. For this purpose FDF needs a criterion (radial/angular distance from Solar disk centre) to define the coronal transits. Currently FDF has been instructed to use SOHO/Sun/[Mercury,Venus] angle of (35 arcmin (from centre of Solar disk) as criterion. Instrument teams are requested to provide the SOC with information on whether a larger angle is applicable. * Hinode operational and planning information can be found from http://www.isas.jaxa.jp/home/solar/hinode_op/ * STEREO operational and planning information can be found via http://stereo-ssc.nascom.nasa.gov/, more specifically from http://stereo-ssc.nascom.nasa.gov/plans.shtml. * The SOHO JOP/ICAL database and the web pages are now the Solar JOP/ICAL database and web pages. This is due to anticipated increased contributions by and collaborations as well as intercalibrations with STEREO and Hinode. * To provide more unambiguous identification, individual instruments on board spacecraft other than SOHO will be as of this SPWG be referred to with notation SPACECRAFT-INSTRUMENT, for example Hinode-EIS. * The Project Scientist has decided that submission of the Inputs to the Activity Plan (IAPs) will change to be voluntary. The PS has informed the SOHO community of the change on 22 Feb by e-mail. * The FOT will begin testing the automation procedures on the week beginning 19 March. The passes will continue to be manned until after an operational readiness review and both agencies agree to a change in the mission management plan, both of which won't be for at least a couple of months, after we have significant experience with the automation. * New JOP vs. modified existing JOP rules-of-thumb: New JOP, if/when scientifically or qualitatively new type of a coordination is set up; modified JOP, when the investigation (the foci or targets thereof) remains essentially the same but new instruments/spacecraft/GBOs/etc are brought to bear. $Log: agenda.txt,v $ Revision 1.10 2007/03/23 04:37:45 tsiili Added TRACE and MDI comments Revision 1.9 2007/03/23 04:15:49 tsiili Added SUMER comments Revision 1.8 2007/03/23 04:06:42 tsiili Added Del Zanna's comments Revision 1.7 2007/03/23 04:00:39 tsiili Added UVCS comments Revision 1.6 2007/03/22 21:10:37 tsiili Added CDS' comments.
