1. Boundary conditions


- SOHO is right side up until the next manoeuvre which is 
tentatively scheduled for June 6.

- All available keyhole information is at

- SOCs have received indications of Radio Frequency Interference (RFI)
events caused by MSG-1 and 2 on Mar 21-Apr 6. Durations of
the order of 5 min maximum. At this point the outlook is that SOHO will not
record during the RFIs due to the MDI Continuous Contact
observations.

- Except for Major Flare Watches, TRACE will be doing full disk
mosaics if/when EIT is not able to do synoptic sets due to keyhole
operations.

- KNOWN submode dependent activities/submode changes:

Some of the default SUMER campaign dates overlap with keyholes -
which is not a problem in itself (submode 5 will often be needed for
keyholes anyhow) as long as potential periods of no SUMER data
between passes can be accepted.

SUMER will make a raster in the EIT FOV during the EIT shutterless
#23, segment 1 (April 12).  Program will be loaded during the
mini-campaign and started either by time-tag or manually (need Chris
to press the button), to be decided later.  SUMER contact: Maria
Madjarska.

SOC needs to know whether the Mercury transit observations are submode
dependent. According to EIT the observations can be carried out in
either submode 5 or 6. FDF has been contacted soon to get the
observational geometry.

  2. Priorities for the coming month and more


a) Joint observing plans and campaigns

Continuing campaigns:

Campaign #6850 is for "individual instrument studies" selecting an AR
target [partially] influenced by the Max Millennium target selection
to maximise chances of serendipitous co-observations.

EIT supports all with half/full-res 195 Å CME watch in submode 5/6,
except JOP175 getting half/full-res 304 Å CME watch in submode 5/6,
and Network-Internetwork Oscillations which is TBD by Scott
McIntosh.  As long as the S/C is in submode 6, all EIT CME watch
will be in full res. Major Flare Watches will be in full-res even if
it requires a submode change, unless the target is observed by
SUMER.

JOP175 is listed as a top-priority TOO for March 17-26. 

The question of whether or not to continue campaign #7033 (Network-
Internetwork Oscillations) has been brought up, and the issue of
how to list a possible "final, long run" has been raised. If that
run will involve a significant change to the existing campaign,
e.g. by including Solar-B instruments, it should be a separate
item (and the current campaign can be closed). If not, the campaign
can be continued until the final run has been done, to keep things
simple by using the existing campaign number.

* Mar 22-May 21 MDI 60-day Continuous Contact

Full disk Magnetograms/Dopplergrams.

New Norcia will cover a few of the gaps. For details, see the
graphical DSN schedule.


* Mar 23-Apr 4 SUMER mini-campaign

Dietmar Germerott will come to Goddard to conduct observations.


* Mar 24-26     Internetwork field/transition region (#7174), 09:00-11:00 UT,
                SUMER/MDI/DOT, POC: Luca Teriaca.

MDI can support only with Full Disk Magnetogram data due to a 60-day
Continuous Contact/Helioseismology period.

Information on eclipse-related support observations has been compiled

* Apr 11-26     JOP185 Solar fibrils: spectroscopy and tomography,
                07:00 UT - TBC UT, [EIT/MDI/TRACE](TBC)/CDS/DOT/SST,
                POC: Jan Rybak

Detailed JOP description is under preparation. Initial JOP outline
has been sent to the abovementioned SOHO/TRACE teams.

Due to the 60-day Continuous Contact MDI can only support with 1-min
cadence full disk Magnetograms and Dopplergrams with 96-min synoptic
Magnetograms and Continuum images.

Bernhard Fleck acts as the deputy JOP leader for the final planning
and initial days of the first run.


* Apr 12      Sounding Rocket Launch, 18:10 UT - 18:20 UT, 
                EUNIS/EIT/CDS/MDI/TRACE, POC: Jeff Brosius & Roger Thomas

DSN D16 has been reserved to support the launch. There will be
no contingency shutterless on 11 Apr. EIT Shutterless #23 has been
shifted to begin at 18:40 UT to allow for the EUNIS launch, supporting
SOHO and TRACE observations and switching to support the shutterless to
be completed in time.


* Apr 12,19     EIT Shutterless #23, 18:40-21:20 UT

The shutterless #23 has been shifted to begin at 18:40 UT to allow for
the EUNIS launch, supporting SOHO and TRACE observations and switching
to support the shutterless to be completed in time.

SUMER plans to observe on April 12, with buffered observations in
submode 6.

CDS will participate.

TRACE plans to support these runs, will coordinate as necessary with EUNIS.

MDI will support Shutterless #23 with 1-min cadence Full Disk
Magnetograms and Dopplergrams along with 96-min synoptic Magnetograms
and Continuum images.


* May 27-Jun 14 26m Keyhole (May 31-Jun 11 34m Keyhole)


* Jun 3-9       La Palma Observations, MDI/TRACE/La Palma, POC: Tom Berger, TBC

MDI has requested good DSN coverage for this time as well as the
sister run in October, and a September/October run for Bart
DePontieu. Support for the June run is unlikely due to the keyhole
period.

TRACE will also support this observation.


* Jun 28-Jul 12 JOP171 Solar Network Variability and Dynamics, CDS/EIT/MDI/DOT,
                POC: Peter Gomory

CDS has worked out the details with Peter already.

EIT sees no problems supporting the request.

MDI will support the request, tentatively taking 1-min cadence
high-res magnetograms and continuum images.

TRACE is also planning to support.


* Jul 12-16     MDI Continuous Contact

The default plan is Full Disk Magnetograms and Dopplergrams, but
it's subject to change based on solar activity and general requests
for MDI observations.  We may continue with whatever we run for
JOP171.


* Jul 26, Aug 2 EIT Shutterless #24, TBC


* Aug 16-20     MDI Continuous Contact

Plan TBC, current default plan is 1-min cadence Full Disk Magnetograms and
Dopplergrams.


* Aug 21-Sep 19 26m Keyhole (Aug 28-Sep 13 34m Keyhole)

Possible MDI focus change after the keyhole (see also section 2 c).


* Aug 25-Sep 3  JOP178/JOP157 Filament and its Environment, 
                  MDI/CDS/EIT/TRACE/THEMIS/GBOs, POC: Brigitte Schmieder,TBC

Note the overlap with the September keyhole.


b) Intercalibration activities

c) Individual instrument plans

MDI:

See section 2a for MDI continuous contact periods.

MDI may reduce the ALT cadence during Keyholes to be less than 15 ALT
magnetograms per day if the lack of high rate telemetry is such that
we will lose all or almost all of the 15 ALT Magnetograms each day.
The ALT cadence will be decided on an individual Keyhole basis and
even a daily basis during each Keyhole depending on the 70 m antenna
availability at the time.

All requests for MDI support need to be made several months ahead of
time and sent to mdi-ops@mdisas.nascom.nasa.gov. Even outside keyholes,
MDI can only do 1-minute cadence observations when we have contact and
there is no recorder dump in progress.

Anyone requesting MDI observations is encouraged to read this page in
order to have a better idea of what observing modes would be best suited
for a particular study.  More detailed information about how MDI
operates, observational constraints and telemetry information can be
found at http://mdisas.nascom.nasa.gov/MDI_Collaboration_Details.

MDI is back in best focus for Full Disk observing and may switch to
better high-resolution observation focus after the June keyhole, in
preparation for late summer/early fall timeframe requests for high-res
observations.


UVCS:

We have been using the LyA detector for some observations and will
keep planning so when appropriate.

CDS:

A re-calibration of GIS (filament and raw data dumps) is being
performed.


LASCO/EIT:

SUMER:

SUMER plans a compact campaign starting Mar 23 and ending Apr 4.
Ending date could be as early as Mar 31, weekend is contingency.


TRACE:

TRACE is in its normal operations mode until the next 'eclipse
season', which expected to start on 2006/doy275 and last through
2007/doy103.

NASA has announced that it plans to continue funding of TRACE
operations at close to the FY06 level through FY08, followed by a
significant ramping down of operations into FY09.

NOTE that TRACE in general reserves the right to withdraw support
from agreed, existing collaborations if a sufficiently "good active
region" is called by the Max Millennium group.

The rest are FYI items:

* If anyone has projects that require high rate (i.e. 1 minute
cadence) MDI support, now is a good time to ask! If you need MDI
data, make sure you request it specifically. There is no significant
change in the shutter performance over the last 10 months;
monitoring continues, but no immediate changes in operations are
planned.

* DSN support should be requested at least 6 months in advance.  Keep
this in mind for: ground-based collaborations that require MDI
support, stellar/shutterless observations that require NRT, etc.
